On this page, we compare official telc exams at the European level according to the European Reference Framework, comparing them with the official exam from the Goethe Institute. Both institutions offer official German exams for levels A1, A2, B1, B2, and C1 of the European Reference Framework. Level C2 is only offered by the Goethe Institute. New since 2013, telc offers specific exams (German exam for doctors – telc Deutsch B2-C1 Medizin and German exam for nurses and caregivers for the elderly – telc B1-B2 Pflege), as well as exams for immigrants to Germany (DTZ – Deutsch Test für Zuwanderer A2-B1).
Start Deutsch 1 (A1)
Start Deutsch 2 (A2)
After completing the A1 + A1B courses, you can take the first telc exam, "Start Deutsch 1," which represents the first step in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. After completing the A2 + A2B courses, you can take the Start Deutsch 2 exam.
This exam certifies the ability to communicate in German at a basic level and certifies a good foundation in German.
Zertifikat Deutsch (ZD) (B1)
This exam is considered a verification test of a good basic knowledge of German. Holders of this certificate have mastered a basic vocabulary of approximately 2,000 words and the most important grammatical structures. They can participate in conversations on general and everyday topics. This German exam is equivalent to level B1 of the European Framework of Reference for Languages.
Zertifikat telc Deutsch B2 (B2)
For people planning to work in Germany, a minimum level of B1 (Zertifikat Deutsch) is recommended, but it's better to have this B2 certificate to document a good command of German and make it easier to find a job in Germany
Zertifikat telc Deutsch C1 (formerly called ZMP = Zentrale Mittelstufenprüfung Por the Goethe-Institut) (C1)
This exam is open to German students who have completed approximately 800 hours of German classes. Some universities in Germany accept it as sufficient certification for academic studies.
