Negation in German with “kein” or “nicht”
In German, there are two ways to form negation: “kein” and “nicht”. When do you use which? It’s simple. While “kein” is an article and can only be used to negate nouns, “nicht” is an adverb and is used to negate everything else (except nouns ;-) ). You can use “nicht” to negate, for example, adjectives, verbs, parts of a sentence, or entire sentences.
Negation with “kein”:
“Kein” is the negative form of the indefinite article “ein”. Like all articles, “kein” always comes before the noun. Also, like all articles, it is declined.
Das ist ein Mann. / Das ist kein Mann.
Das ist eine Frau. / Das ist keine Frau.
Ich habe einen Hund. / Ich habe keinen Hund.
Ich habe eine Katze. / Ich habe keine Katze.
Negation with “nicht”:
Unlike “kein”, “nicht” is not declined because it is an adverb, and adverbs are not declined. However, like “kein”, it is placed before the word or part of the sentence you want to negate.
Negating adjectives:
Das Haus ist schön. / Das Haus ist nicht schön.
Negating adverbs:
Peter geht oft ins Kino. / Peter geht nicht oft ins Kino.
Negating objects with or without a preposition:
Ich gehe heute Abend mit Maria ins Kino.
Ich gehe heute Abend nicht mit Maria ins Kino.
Ich gehe heute Abend mit Maria nicht ins Kino.
Ich gehe nicht heute Abend mit Maria ins Kino.
Negating verbs:
Negating the verb automatically negates the entire sentence. To negate the verb, place “nicht” at the end of the sentence, because the verb must remain in the second position.
Kaufst du die Schuhe? – Nein, ich kaufe die Schuhe nicht.
Schläft Peter? – Nein, Peter schläft nicht.
If the last position is already occupied by another element (separable verbs, modal verbs, perfect tense, passive voice, etc.), then place “nicht” in the second-to-last position. This still negates the entire sentence.
Ich kaufe heute nicht ein. (sentence with separable verb)
Ich kann die Aufgabe nicht lösen. (sentence with modal verb)
Ich habe heute Nacht nicht geschlafen. (perfect tense)
Mein Auto wird heute nicht repariert. (passive voice)
